2. Program Directors

Within a degree program, program directors supervise graduate studies (PhD, DrPH, MA, MS, MPH). The head of a program shares accountability for overseeing and enhancing graduate education within the department, working closely with faculty members and SPH administration. Among the duties are:

  • Engaging in events such as Prospective Student Information Sessions, Accepted Student Days, and other recruitment and yield gatherings
  • Familiarity with the management and governance of graduate studies within the program is required of all faculty members as a part of service and citizenship
  • supervising program admissions (except for MPH and MS PHR admissions, which are managed by an Admissions Committee consisting of faculty members from all departments)
  • Functioning as the graduate student's point of contact
  • Facilitating communication between the program's instructors, graduate students, and SPH management; and, as necessary, representing the program on SPH governance committees
  • assisting in the selection of a permanent adviser and providing orientation and advice to graduate students regarding program and degree requirements until that time, while also making sure accreditation standards are met.
  • Presenting proposed curriculum modifications for approval to the Education Committee

3. MPH Certificate Leads

Together with the MPH director and program staff, MPH certificate leads supervise the development and execution of functional and context certifications that are integrated into the curriculum.

Functional certificate leads have the following duties:

  • The certificate's drafting competencies
  • Finding classes that fulfill certification requirements
  • Connecting course evaluations to competencies
  • Creating the criteria for the integrated learning experience (ILE) and a scoring system to determine whether the ILE was completed satisfactorily
  • Being the point of contact for MPH students enrolled in the certificate, taking part in events such as Prospective Student Information Sessions, Accepted Student Days, and other recruitment and yield activities (which are required of all faculty members as a part of their service and citizenship), and attending certificate leads' meetings
  • Finding classes that fulfill certification requirements
  • Acting as a contact for MPH students enrolled in the certificate program and attending certificate leads' meetings
  • Take part in practicum information sessions for students pursuing certificates.
  • holding certificate events for certificate faculty and students
  • Informing certificate faculty about pertinent issues (such as program updates and advising requirements).

4. Writing Director

The creation of writing assistance programs for teachers, staff, and students falls under the purview of the writing director. The staff members who manage the peer coaching program in the office of Graduate Student Life provide essential assistance to the writing director.

The following are among the duties of the writing director:

  • providing resources to support and enhance public health writing for faculty, staff, and students; acting as a liaison with BU library staff
  • Keeping faculty and staff at SPH informed about pertinent developments
  • Closely collaborating with the core course and other faculty to provide advice on writing assignments and rubrics
  • Conducting specialized writing sessions in the core curriculum
  • Upon request, acting as a liaison between faculty, staff, and students
  • Managing relationships in writing centers

5. Program Directors

Departmentally-based staff also provides support to program directors and certificate leads in a variety of program administration areas, including admissions, student oversight, community-building activities, and data requests.

The employees in the following provide core assistance for program directors and certificate leads:

  • Admissions Office: oversees marketing for enrollment, recruiting activities, application processing, and communications of acceptance, denial, or postponement
  • Career services and the practicum office oversee the academic requirements of the MPH practicum and give career counseling and advice through events like practicum information sessions.
  • They also organize professional development activities including Career PREP, practicum advising, Career Fair, and Practicum Expo
  • The education office helps with data requests, program adjustments, accreditation needs, and evaluation of new educational initiatives
  • The Graduate Student Life Office supports graduate students in all areas of their personal and professional development. The Registrar's Office is in charge of course scheduling, student registration, and program and student compliance with SPH, federal, and university regulations, as well as academic integrity
